Finally Cesare Battisti is free! After being trialed unlawfully without his presence, he is free. His case is being used by Italy government today as a deviation for the Italian press, so the press can write more about Battisti and worry less about the bad doings of Silvio Berlusconi. It is an intelligent move, but it did not work!
The Italian government can take the case to the International European Court, but it will not help much because Brazil, as a Sovereign State, can authorize or not a person to stay in its territory. Even more after the President of the Republic and the Supreme Court have decided so about it.
It is opportune to remember here that Italy did not want to extradite to Brazil the corrupt Brazilian-Italian banker Salvatore Cacciola, who was finally detained in Monaco by Interpol and brought to Brazil.
A huge number of intellectuals in France, Brazil and in Italy were waiting and hoping for the liberation of Battisti. They know that there is more to it than just arguments of Justice. The is a huge propaganda from the Italian government to erase from the press the Berlusconi affairs.
In a weak economic world like the one of today, where European countries are needing loans to cover their debts, it improbable that Italy can convince the rest of Europe to help in a case between two specific countries, as they already have tried and Europe have answered with a big “no”. Even more: the rest of Europe will not want to have problems with one of the BRIC countries in such difficult times. Italy will not succeed in forcing Brazil to hand Battisti over via European efforts.
Hereby I include a picture of the latest number of The Economist, just to prove what I am talking about, where Berlusconi is seen as "the man who screwed an entire country"!!!
